I really pride myself on being completely professional in my real estate VA business, but sometimes you have just got to sound off a little bit. Especially when you see a client getting taken to the cleaners. What do I mean by that?
I recently signed a new client up for full support of his business, and when we went into the back end of his WordPress site, I saw something quite alarming: There were no plugins. And I mean not even a place to ADD a plugin. Now, all of you know how easy it is to add a plugin, so there is really no reason to keep the owner of the site from having this ability.
We wanted to change hosting companies for him so I asked about getting access to his cPanel at his hosting company and he doesn’t have access to his cPanel. The company that made the site (no, I won’t point fingers) has all the access. So that leads me to one very angry conclusion: They are hosting all their clients sites on their hosting account and that is why we can’t just easily pack up the site and move it. Basically, they have him up the creek without a paddle. Or maybe I should say my team, because we have to do it the hard way.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not the hard work that makes me angry. It’s the fact this company is hosting my client’s website on their hosting account, it’s not SEO optimized for him, and it’s just not going to bring in the business it should. It is completely locked in with proprietary software. This is a headache a knowledgeable real estate VA could have saved him. But it’s OK, because we will fix this problem.
So now we start the project of getting this client ready to go with a new website, one that he actually owns. It will be a self-hosted WordPress site built on the Genesis framework. One that will have SEO, plugins for greater functionality, and he will have full administrative control.
And by the way, if you need a great website designer, check out the portfolio of my team member, Cyndi Papia. She does beautiful WordPress sites you will love, and your clients will love too!
